Published by Frederick Gleason of Boston. This print captures one of the most significant moments of the American Revolution when Washington, appointed by the Continental Congress, assumed command of colonial forces under the elm tree at Cambridge on July 3, 1775. The scene shows Washington with assembled troops, commemorating this pivotal transition that united the colonies under Virginia leadership.
Gleason's Pictorial was known for its high-quality wood engravings of historical scenes, current events, and notable landmarks. These prints were widely distributed throughout New England and remain sought-after examples of mid-19th century American illustration.
