The Annual Reports of the Bureau of Ethnology by J.W. Powell, published between 1881 and the early 20th century, document the foundational efforts of the Smithsonian Institution's Bureau of Ethnology to systematically study and preserve the cultures, languages, and histories of Indigenous peoples across North America.
