Travel Photo Album of Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Russia, and Denmark by Branson DeCou.
Branson DeCou was a photographer and travelogue lecturer who was active during the first half of the 20th century. He was born 1892 in Philadelphia and started touring the world in 1915 after attending the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken. He earned his trade as a travel lecturer where he would travel across the country showing his photographs to local organizations such as Union League Club of Chicago or the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Typically he would show 150 hand colored lantern slides with music playing in the background as he went through. His archives are stored at the UC Santa Cruz where a bibliography of him describes DeCou as “highly successful”. He died relatively young at 49 from a heart attack.
This album has photos of a trip through Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Russia, and Denmark. It’s not clear what this album was used for, perhaps as a working album of the photographs he would be showing at one of his travelogue shows. Lantern slides of the same pictures can be found at his archives. Beautiful pictures of daily life in these countries.
