The first edition of the Atlas of Canada is a landmark in Canadian cartography. Commissioned by the Department of the Interior and directed by geographer James White, it was the first comprehensive national atlas produced by the Canadian government, covering everything from physical geography and geology to railways, telephones, population, and trade. The lithographed color maps are large and beautifully executed, and the statistical diagrams offer a fascinating snapshot of Canada at the dawn of the twentieth century.
