James White, F.R.G.S. Atlas of Canada. Department of the Interior, Honourable Frank Oliver, Minister.
Ottawa: Toronto Lithographing Company, Limited. 1906. Approximately 12 x 17 inches (folio). 83+ plates including color maps, city plans, and statistical diagrams. Covers territorial divisions, relief, geology, minerals, forests, telegraphs, telephones, railways, population density, drainage basins, trade and commerce, and more. Dark green cloth boards with gold-stamped titling and ruled borders; marbled endpapers. Ex-library with stamps and call numbers on endpapers. Spine covering largely perished, corners heavily worn, boards rubbed with some mildew spotting to cloth. Interior maps are bright and clean with vivid color printing. Good to very good.
The first edition of the Atlas of Canada is a landmark in Canadian cartography. Commissioned by the Department of the Interior and directed by geographer James White, it was the first comprehensive national atlas produced by the Canadian government, covering everything from physical geography and geology to railways, telephones, population, and trade. The lithographed color maps are large and beautifully executed, and the statistical diagrams offer a fascinating snapshot of Canada at the dawn of the twentieth century. An important and increasingly scarce work.
