Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1899–1900. Approximately 15 x 13 inches. 24 pages of text plus 30 color lithograph maps by A. Hoen & Co., Baltimore. Complete. Original dark blue/purple cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering on the upper cover. Covers show wear with scuffing, rubbing, and surface loss; corners bumped. Former library copy (Michigan) with "WITHDRAWN" stamp on English title page. Internally the maps and text pages are clean and bright with vivid color. Binding is solid. Very good.

This landmark atlas was produced under the direction of Rev. José Algué, a Spanish Jesuit priest and scientist who served as Director of the Manila Observatory. The maps were drafted entirely by native Filipino draftsmen and completed in 1899, then published by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey as Special Publication No. 3 in 1900. It represents the most comprehensive cartographic survey of the Philippine archipelago at the time of the American acquisition from Spain. The atlas includes political, ethnographic, orographic, meteorological, and seismographic maps of the islands, along with detailed regional maps of Luzon, the Visayas, Mindanao, and smaller island groups — all rendered in beautiful chromolithography. An essential document of Philippine history, American imperialism, and turn-of-the-century cartography.
