Atlas de Finlande. [Atlas of Finland].

Helsingfors [Helsinki]: Société Anonyme F. Tilgmann, 1899. Approximately 17 x 12 inches. 12 pages of text plus 32 color lithograph map plates (many double-page, containing 86 individual maps). Text in French. Original half leather over dark blue cloth boards with gilt title and ornamental device on front cover. Former library copy (Michigan State Normal College) with "WITHDRAWN" stamps on title page and front free endpaper; call number notation in pencil. Spine leather heavily worn with losses and peeling; leather corners worn through; cloth rubbed and scuffed. Hinges cracked but text block holding. Internally clean; map plates bright with vivid color printing throughout. Good.

This is the first edition of the Atlas de Finlande. Published by the Geographical Society of Finland, it grew out of maps exhibited at the 1895 International Geographical Congress in London and was funded in part by the Finnish government. The atlas provides an extraordinarily comprehensive portrait of Finland — then still a Grand Duchy within the Russian Empire — through 32 thematic map plates covering topography, hypsometry, petrography, quaternary deposits, meteorology (isotherms, isobars, wind roses, snow depth), botany, forests, population demographics, agriculture, industry, trade, communications, railways, postal service, historical boundaries, and prehistoric finds. The atlas pioneered advanced cartographic techniques including choropleth maps, proportional symbols, and early flow diagrams. A landmark of scientific cartography and Finnish national identity.
