Deutsche Seewarte. Indischer Ozean. Ein Atlas von 35 Karten, die physikalischen Verhältnisse und die Verkehrs-Strassen darstellend. [Indian Ocean. An Atlas of 35 Charts Depicting the Physical Conditions and Shipping Routes].
Hamburg: L. Friederichsen & Co. 1891. Folio, approximately 14.5 x 13 inches. Original printed boards with red cloth spine; boards worn and soiled with bumped corners, spine intact. Library withdrawal stamp on interior title page. Charts clean and bright with vivid color throughout. Very Good.

Published by Germany's Imperial Naval Observatory as a companion to the Segelhandbuch für den Indischen Ozean, this atlas contains 35 color lithographic charts printed by Wagner & Debes of Leipzig — covering ocean depths, currents, sea temperatures, barometric pressure, wind patterns, shipping lanes, and whale distribution across the Indian Ocean. The Deutsche Seewarte ocean atlases are the high-water mark of 19th-century oceanographic cartography, and the Indian Ocean volume is the scarcest of the three (Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific). Preceded by a detailed explanatory text citing survey data from named vessels including HMS Challenger and SMS Gazelle. Rarely seen on the market.
