Frederick W. Beers (1839-1933) was among the most prominent surveyors and cartographers of his era. Frederick joined the family business and went on to personally map every county in New York State. Between 1865 and 1900, the Beers family and their collaborators produced atlases for more than eighty counties across ten states. Frederick's extraordinary career spanned over sixty years, during which he also served as head of the map division and Commissioner of Public Records in Brooklyn for thirty-five years, retiring at the age of ninety.
The publisher, Gaylord Watson (1833-1896), operated from offices at 278 Pearl Street and 36 Vesey Street in New York City. Watson had established himself as a respected map publisher following his partnership with his uncle Humphrey Phelps in the 1860s. Known for producing highly decorative wall maps, railroad guides, and emigrant atlases, Watson was recognized by the Library of Congress as one of the reputable map publishing firms of the period. Though financial difficulties following an 1881 fire would eventually force Watson to relocate, his collaboration with Beers on this atlas produced one of the finest cartographic documents of the Hudson Valley.
