This full-color facsimile reproduces the Atlas of the City and County of San Francisco, originally published in 1876 by William P. Humphreys & Co., compiled from actual surveys and official records by W.P. Humphreys, A.B. Holcombe, and W.C. Kewen, with maps engraved by Worley & Bracher and printed by F. Bourquin in Philadelphia. According to David Rumsey, this is the only true atlas of San Francisco published in the nineteenth century, apart from real estate block books and fire insurance atlases — making it an exceptional cartographic record of the city at the height of its post–Gold Rush boom, when San Francisco had become the largest and most important commercial center on the Pacific Coast. The atlas consists of detailed plat maps showing each city block, with parks, school lots, and fire department lots highlighted in color.
Summary of Contents
The atlas presents a block-by-block cartographic survey of San Francisco as it existed in 1876, documenting property lines, lot subdivisions, street layouts, and public lands across the city and county. Each plate captures the urban fabric of a rapidly growing metropolis, from the densely built downtown wards along the waterfront to the outlying districts pushing westward toward the Pacific. Parks, public squares, school lots, and fire department parcels are color-coded for easy identification, providing a clear visual record of civic infrastructure during the city's first great period of expansion.
