INCOMPLETE COPY — contains 28 of the original 48 map pages plus table of contents, title page, and four advertising leaves. Maps present: pp. 7–21, 24–27, 34–35, 37–39, 42, plus North American Petroleum Co.'s Lands (unnumbered). Advertising pp. 3, 5, 7, and 8. Missing: Table of Distances, Statistics, pp. 22–23, 28–33, 36, 40–41, and remaining advertising/view pages. Several early map leaves (pp. 7–11) have been used as scrapbook pages with Civil War–era newspaper clippings pasted over the maps; pp. 12–13 are partially covered. Original blue paper-covered boards are present but heavily worn, with the cover label mostly intact. Edges chipped and frayed throughout; some leaves detached. Fair to good condition, sold as-is for the maps and content remaining.
An essential and scarce atlas documenting the heart of the Pennsylvania oil boom at its peak. Published just six years after the Drake Well strike, these maps show individual landowners, petroleum company leases, oil wells, refineries, and boom towns along Oil Creek, the Allegheny River, Cherry Run, and surrounding townships in Venango, Crawford, Warren, and Forest counties. The atlas includes detailed plans of Oil City, Titusville, Franklin, Plumer, Tionesta, and dozens of smaller oil settlements. Even in this incomplete state, the atlas is a valuable resource for petroleum history, Venango County genealogy, and collectors of Civil War–era Americana. The scrapbooked newspaper clippings are from the civil war era.
