Fair.

A scarce Civil War song sheet broadside written by Dr. G. H. Sutherland, a Union soldier of the 92nd New York State Volunteer Infantry (the "Second St. Lawrence County Regiment"), who was taken prisoner at the Battle of Fair Oaks in 1862 and held at Fort Anderson near Newbern, North Carolina. The song, set to the popular air "The Floating Scow of Old Virginia," is a wry, sometimes bitter commentary on soldiers' pay — or the lack of it — noting that the regiment had gone unpaid for six months while their families suffered at home. Sutherland's verses touch on marching, battle, prison camp conditions, and the soldiers' longing for home, all framed around the refrain about "green backs." The imprint at the foot advertises copies for sale at 10 cents each (or 12 for $1.00), directing buyers to Sutherland in camp or to his son F. G. Sutherland in Hermon, St. Lawrence County, New York. The 92nd N.Y.V. was recruited principally from Franklin and St. Lawrence counties and saw action at Yorktown, Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg. Song sheet broadsides from identifiable Civil War prisoners of war are uncommon survivals. Accompanied by a modern laser-printed reference sheet with the regimental history of the 92nd N.Y. Infantry (not original).

Satisfaction guaranteed or you can send it back!

Satisfaction guaranteed or you can send it back!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0663/7705/6411/files/57_56db1c8b-6d7f-4a97-91e1-ffc644e6ac95.jpg?v=1778113565
https://lacavararebooks.com/products/dr-g-h-sutherland-green-backs-or-pay-day-civil-war-song-broadside
