Alfred T. Andreas, a former Civil War veteran and map salesman, envisioned a new kind of atlas—one that combined detailed maps with rich illustrations and biographical sketches to capture the social, economic, and cultural fabric of an entire state.

Andreas began the project in 1873, when much of Minnesota was still unmapped and sparsely populated. From his Chicago office, he directed a team of over 100 employees, including mapmakers, artists, and salesmen, who traveled across the state to gather data and promote subscriptions. For $15, subscribers could have their names included in the atlas, and many paid extra to feature portraits, biographies, or illustrations of their homes and farms
The production was massive: it required 70 tons of paper, 17 tons of cardboard, and cost over $200,000—a huge sum at the time. Despite a poor wheat harvest that left many unable to pay, Andreas still managed to distribute around 10,000 copies, reaching about one in seven Minnesota households.

The deluxe edition of the 1874 Andreas Atlas of Minnesota was a special, limited-run version that included three large fold-out bird’s-eye views of St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Winona. Ogle & Co. of Chicago, was one of the most prolific and respected publishers of American county atlases in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The plat maps name thousands of individual landowners across every township and section, providing an irreplaceable snapshot of Bureau County land tenure in 1892, on the eve of the Columbian Exposition and at the height of the Gilded Age. This atlas is foundational reference material for genealogists tracing Swedish, German, Irish, and Yankee farming families across Princeton, Sheffield, Buda, Tiskilwa, Wyanet, Walnut, LaMoille, Ohio, Spring Valley, and the surrounding communities. Of particular note are the detailed plats of Spring Valley, then a rapidly growing coal-mining boomtown along the Illinois River, and Princeton, the county seat with deep abolitionist roots tied to Owen Lovejoy and the Underground Railroad.
Satisfaction guaranteed or you can send it back!

Satisfaction guaranteed or you can send it back!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0663/7705/6411/files/57_383a30a4-886e-4565-841e-4f0e3c73f0ad.jpg?v=1778113487
1913-standard-atlas-of-eaton-county-michigan-directory-ads-map
1913 Standard Atlas of Eaton County Michigan / Directory Ads Map

[Michigan, Eaton County Atlas, 1913] Standard Atlas of Eaton County Michigan.

Chicago: Geo. A. Ogle & Co.'s reign as the preeminent American county atlas publisher. The township plats name thousands of individual landowners across every section of the county, providing essential reference material for genealogists tracing families in Sterling, Rock Falls, Fulton, Morrison, Prophetstown, Lyndon, Erie, Albany, Tampico, Coleta, and the surrounding farming communities. The atlas is particularly notable for its detailed multi-page city plats of Sterling and Rock Falls, the twin industrial cities along the Rock River, and Fulton on the Mississippi, capturing these communities at the height of their pre-WWI industrial prosperity. Tampico Township is included — the birthplace of Ronald Reagan, who was born there in 1911, just one year before this atlas was published. The Patrons' Reference Directory offers biographical and farm-ownership detail rarely found in later plat books.
